Sail Away

Nautical

My nautical love has been going strong all Summer long and has no end in sight. As August heads into September, and we are all reminded that Autumn is approaching with the cool night air (it's been as low as 50 in the Northeast!) transitioning your clothing is now becoming required. Something as simple as a light blazer will do the trick. A cardigan will work as well, but blazers have a polished feel to them that a cardigan cannot match. This blue and white stripped dress, with gold accented jewelry, feels fresh and breezy for Summer. To combat the cooler night air, simply slip into a similarly styled blazer, this one from Banana Republic with subtle blue and white stripes, to keep you warm and perfectly polished as you make those Summer nights to remember.

Jewelry completes an outfit and can either make you feel dressed to the nines or subtly shimmering with key pieces placed here and there. Whatever your jewelry style may be, it goes without saying that these gems have an impact. I always use jewelry that is personal to me. Rarely do I ever wear something that was bought just because I thought it was pretty. There is always a story or a memory attached to mine. Here, the pin on the blazer belonged to my mom along with the anchor earrings, which I've been wearing all summer long. The necklace I received as a gift because of the nautical feel to it.

Blueberry Cream Pie

Refreshing Delight

Blueberry Cream Pie

One tradition my dad and I have is every week he comes over our house and I make a nice big dinner with all of the trimmings. Everything is home made from scratch, something I'm very happy to do since I want to be like the lovely ladies in my family who knew how to do things right the old fashioned way. My mom and my grandma Kretchmer have always been two of my biggest inspirations, and these two women knew how to cook a homemade meal and delectable dessert all without batting an eye lash.

When my dad was over one night finishing up dinner, I gave him my retro baking book to flip through and pick out a dessert for next weeks dinner party. My dad has always been a pie type of guy so it came as little surprise when he choose the Blueberry Cream Pie. I have never made a pie before, so I was a bit apprehensive, but knew I could complete it with little mishap. The great thing about this pie is how refreshing it is with the blueberries and homemade whipped cream. Talk about a delectable dessert. Now on to the party!

What You'll Need:

For the pie crust:

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/3 cup butter (or coconut oil!)
  • glass of ice water

For the filling:

  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 1/2 tbsps cornstarch
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 2/3 cup water
  • 3 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (I used fresh)
  • 2 tbsps butter (or coconut oil)
  • 1 1/2 tbsps lemon juice
  • 1 cup whipping cream
  • 1 tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla

Directions:

To make the pastry:

  • Mix flour and salt in a medium mixing bowl. Use pastry cutter to blend in butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Add 3 to 4 tbsps of ice water one at a time until dough is moist enough to form into a ball. Flatten ball to 1/2 inch thickness, smooth rough edges, and roll out onto a floured surface. Dough should form an even circle 1 1/2 inches longer than a 8 or 9 inch pie pan. Place crust loosely in pan, pat out air pockets, fold and flute edge to form even rim. Prick crust generously with form and bake at 450 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes. Allow to cool before filling.

To make filling:

  • In a saucepan blend together sugar, cornstarch, and salt. Stir in water and 1 cup of blueberries. Stirring constantly, bring to a boil and cook until very thick. Add butter and lemon juice; mix well and let cool. Gently stir in remaining 2 cups of blueberries and refrigerate about 1 hour. In a small mixing bowl beat whipping cream until thick. Mix in powdered sugar and vanilla. Cover bottom of pie shell with half the whipped cream. Pour blueberry filling over whipped cream. Chill about 2 hours. Top pie with remaining whipped cream.

I also made another batch of the whipped cream to keep on hand for any little desserts or fruit cups I decided to make. During our dinner, I always make a cup of fresh mixed fruits and usually drizzle with honey. This week, I topped it off with the whipped cream much to my dads delight. Some tips for making the whipped cream are to put the metal bowl and beater attachment in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before stirring. I used my kitchen aid mixer for this. Do not over beat either. About 5 minutes is plenty.

Simple Weekend Outfit

This is the kind of summery weekend outfit that I love. It's simply, chic, and effortless. The basic peach tee is spruced up with a lace sleeve from Charming Charlies. The adorable green skirt from Modcloth comes with pink and blue Hydrangea details and feels feminine. The color blocked heels from DSW, still a trend going strong, mix perfectly into the outfit with colors of purple, yellow, and pink. This outfit is great in either Spring or Summer and has that flirty fun feeling to it.

The Ice Bucket Challenge

For my mother...

I was challenged by Dave and Kleynia McKnight and also Emily Kilgore. In turn, I challenge Joe Brey, Mike Fasulka, Alison Kasper, and my brother Michael. A big thanks to my dad for taking the video on my phone and to my husband Justin for helping me with the bucket of ice water. We will be donating to the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) and ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) foundations. It was important for me to do this in order to raise awareness for all of the neurological diseases there are. My mother was diagnosed with MS back in 1997 and fought a long battle for 16 years until succumbing to the illness and passing away this past December. It was heart breaking for my family to see my mother go through this for 16 years and then for her life to end like that was the hardest experience I've ever been through. So I dedicate this challenge to you mom for the uphill challenges you faced everyday. I love  you.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS)—also referred to as motor neurone disease (MND), Charcot disease, and, in the United States, Lou Gehrig's disease—is a neurodegenerative disease with various causes. It is characterised by muscle spasticity, rapidly progressive weakness due to muscle atrophy, difficulty in speaking (dysarthria), swallowing (dysphagia), and breathing (dyspnea). ALS is the most common of the five motor neuron diseases. There is no known cure for ALS.

Multiple sclerosis, or MS, is an autoimmune disease that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system that disrupts the flow of information within the brain, and between the brain and body. People with MS say they have unusual sensations such as pins and needles, numbness, itching, burning, stabbing, or tearing pains. Bladder problems, trouble walking, fuzziness when thinking, dizziness, fatigue, muscle spasms, speech trouble, tremors, and vision problems can also occur. The cause of MS is still unknown- scientists believe the disease is triggered by as-yet-unindentified environment facotr(s) in a person who is genetically predisposed to respond. There is no known cure for MS

The doctors said my mother had one of the worst cases of MS they had ever seen. She declined quickly and then platued to a point where she was could not longer walk and eventually lost use of her arms as well. Each year I could see something fading away with her. It was always subtle, but there. She  was able to grab a hold of a sipping cup to drink water through a straw, then she could no longer reach over to the cup, then she could no longer hold the cup at all, then she no longer had any control over her arms period. She was completely bed ridden and was only able to get out of bed with the use of a lift, and when she did get into a chair, she could only stay out for an hour or two at the most. She was a fighter though. I've never seen anyone with a stronger will power than her. She wanted to be there on my wedding day 3 years ago and she found an inner strength to make it happen. My family was so incredibly proud of her. If I had half the strength and will power she had then I would be good. For any family suffering with a member who has a neurological disease, I understand and know the difficulties you've gone through and the difficulties that lay ahead. I am happy to see the awareness being raised to these diseases and hope one day a cure is found so no one has to ever live like this. Please take the challenge and donate. Have fun doing the ice bucket and take a moment to understand what this is all for.

The last photo I had taken with my mom in her beloved garden built for her by my dad. She did not like having her photo taken because of how she looked with the MS, but it was important for us to have these memories and I'm so thankful that we do. Even in her weakened state from the MS, she still took care of her family. What an amazing woman.

My mom and me in younger years. Here we were about to go to a relatives wedding. This was my favorite hair style of hers. She's so beautiful and the absolute best mother I could have ever asked for.

Hair Care

hair care

One question I get asked the most often would be about my hair. What I do to style it and how I take care of it. The best starting point would be my daily shower routine where I basically shampoo with Herbal Essences and condition with OGX Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco. In the shower I have a wooden comb that I brush the conditioner through with, leave in for the duration of the shower, and rinse out at the end. Next I towel drive my hair for a few minutes and then apply a spray on leave in conditioner from the middle to the ends of my hair. The one I use is Healthy Sexy Hair Soy Tri Wheat Leave In Conditioner. After that I use a spray gel from Garnier. Finally, from OGX, I apply a small amount of Argan Oil to the tips of my hair to keep them smooth and shiny. I brush all of the products through my hair and then simply let it air dry over night. I was blessed with naturally wavy hair, thank you mom!, and use the spray gel to keep the hold throughout the day.In the morning I put my hair in a small bun while I wash my face and put on my makeup. After that, I let it out, and brush the top to keep it smooth. I've always adored my hair color and natural wave and truly believe my hair has stayed so healthy because I do not use heated hair styling tools on it.

The Top 20 Stylish Movies of all Time

Let's be honest, when it comes to clothing style, its the silver screen that we collectively look to for inspiration. I myself have been heavily influenced by the greats revealing their style genius for all of the world to see while glittering upon the movie screen. Both of my prom dresses were influenced by Grace Kelly in two of her three Hitchcock films, "Rear Window" and "To Catch a Thief." I was so inspired by Faye Dunaway's character in "The Thomas Crown Affair," that I started to wear plum eye shadow for a good period of time, including my senior pictures. As a whole, my own style evolved from the screen goddesses of yester-year. Do you own a little black dress in your closet, because if you do,  (if not then you absolutely need to go get one!) you can thank Audrey Hepburn in "Breakfast At Tiffany's" for that. For all of you gents out there, how about the ever popular grey suit? That goes to Cary Grant in North By Northwest. Styles and trends were born with the fabulous actors gracing the silver screen and will continue to do so for as long as fashion and movies are around. Below is a list I created of the top stylish movies of all time. Note, not fashion, but style. The two are different beyond measure. Yves Saint Laurent said it best, "fashion fades, style is eternal."

Listed are number 20 all the way through number 1, which is a movie that not only has great style, but also some of the best actors that have ever lived, not to mention the best director. Be inspired and enjoy!

Easy Cooking

Dill Potatoes

Dill Potatoes

A few weeks ago I came across this delicious recipe while looking for ways to use some dill in my cooking. Every year Justin and I plant a vegetable garden in our back yard. I thought it would be nice to include an herb and why not some dill? My famous chicken noodle soup recipe uses this, as do our home made pickles. The things is, we now have TONS of dill! So on my search went for some more ways to include dill in my cooking. It's also quite nice in salads by the way. This new dinner was a huge hit with my husband who requested that I keep this as a go to. First off you'll need the following ingredients:

  • 2 lbs of baby red potatoes, cut into quarters
  • 1 tsp of salt for the water
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter
  • Garlic Salt to taste
  • 2-3 tbsp of dill chopped
  • 1/2 cup of Parmesan Cheese shredded

Directions:

  1. Fill a large pot with cut potatoes and add warm water until there is ½" of water above the top of the potatoes. Stir in 1 tsp salt. Cover and bring to a boil. Cook red potatoes at a light boil for about 10-12 min in salted water or until you can smoothly pierce potatoes with a fork. Remove from heat and drain well.
  2. In a large pan over medium heat, melt 4 Tbsp butter. Transfer potatoes to the buttery skillet then sprinkle with garlic salt to taste. Toss potatoes to coat them in butter and sprinkle again with garlic salt. Let potatoes sit undisturbed for 2-3 minutes then turn them and let sit another 2-3 minutes.
  3. Once potatoes are starting to turn golden on the second side, turn them and sprinkle generously with fresh dill and top with shredded Parmesan cheese. Remove from heat and let the potatoes sit in the hot skillet to let the cheese melt a bit then serve.

Shop Your Own Closet

Budget Babe

closet

I think it would be safe to say most women love to go shopping. There's something about getting a new item that gives a little thrill. While I'm all for that and enjoy it to no end, I want to challenge you to do something that most probably have never thought of, shop your own closet. With the economy the way it is, all of us could benefit from saving an extra penny here and there for the future. As you can see from the picture to the left, my closet is pretty jam packed as it it. Mind you, this is just my Spring and Summer wardrobe. I have to admit, when I took the challenge myself to peruse through my own closet, I found some items I had forgotten even existed. Finding these "new items" was pretty exciting and felt good, just like a shopping trip would. So for the next week challenge yourself to shop your own closet and be amazed at what you might find.

The Braided Bun

braided bun

Once the dog days of summer finally hit I always find myself inevitably pulling my hair up and off of my face to keep cool. Rather than hap haphazardly doing this, I prefer to keep a styled look whether it be the classic ballerina bun, top knot, classic pony, sock bun, vintage roll up and so on. Today I wanted to show you the braided bun, another way to keep your hair effortlessly stylish.

I first pulled my hair into a classic pony and secured with a hair tie while leaving the top half of my hair out and secured with a pin until ready. Braid the pony and tie with another hair tie. Start twisting the braided pony into a bun and secure with pins. Take the top half of hair left out and wrap that around the base of the bun to hide the elastic tie. Pin the hair underneath the bun. Simple, chic, and lets you stay cool in the warm summer sun.
